PUT-BACK WEEKEND

FEBRUARY 5th-8th

Putting the Citizens Back in Charge!

What Is It?

This is a drive to gather signatures for the Put-Back Amendment and to inform the public about the recall provision that will be on the ballot this fall.

Why Are We Doing It?

The spiral into corruption that Illinois has taken over the last few years calls for more citizen engagement in the process of government-not less!  Through the course of gathering signatures to put Put-Back Amendment on the ballot this fall, we will encourage them to consider reform ideas to fix their state the way they need to.  Recently, a few legislators placed a recall provision on the ballot.   It was written without an open process and we think it is important to consider the consequences of that decision:

-it would take 1 million signatures to recall a governor (990,000 more than a governor needs to get into office)

-30 state legislators (and 15 from each party) need to approve before the citizens can remove a corrupt or incompetent governor.

-If this amendment would have been in place, the people of Illinois could not have even removed Rod Blagojevich.

We think this pits special interests squarely against the needs and concerns of Main Street and stand against the process that produced such an anti-democratic amendment.
